I first read Divergent by Veronica Roth. Divergent is about a dystopian Chicago in which there are 5 factions. You are born into a faction, but when you’re 16 you get to choose which faction you’d like to be part of for the rest of your life. Candor (the Honest), Abnegation (the Selfless), Dauntless (the Brave), Amity (the Peaceful), and Erudite (the Intelligent) are the five factions. Beatrice grows up in the Abnegation faction. The book begins right before her sixteenth birthday where she has to choose between staying with her family and being who she really is. Her choice surprises everyone.
Ready Player One is set in future Earth where there exists an alternate reality called the OASIS. The OASIS has changed the internet and the world as we know it, allowing users to escape the grim reality of a dying world. When the creator of the OASIS, Jim Halliday dies, his will stipulates that he will leave his immense fortune to the user who finds 3 keys and completes 3 challenges inside the OASIS. For the first 5 years or so after his death, no one has found the 1st key. Until Wade Watts, AKA Parcival finds it after years of obsessively searching. The enemy of all normal users is IOI, a company that controls many of the games within the OASIS. IOI is trying to gain full access to the OASIS so that they can charge for access and prevent people from logging in anonymously.
The creator of the OASIS was also obsessed with the 80s so there are TONS of pop culture references that I loved (as a child of the 80s).
I flew through both in maybe a week and a half. Divergent is the first of a series, but if you don’t want to start YET ANOTHER dystopian series, Ready Player One is a standalone novel.
